Okay, maybe Chels was not excited to still have to travel 3 hours via van to the house...but she still has quite a bit of back pain so she was a trooper, even if she didn't smile for the picture :)
We stopped at a fruit stand to get our first fresh fruit of the trip, delicious!
Our first taste of the traditional "tico" lunch, meat or fish with rice & beans, yum!
We stopped to walk over a bridge to see the crocodiles below, yikes!
Steph was not too sure about the crocodiles--luckily we did not see them again on the trip.
They were HUGE!
I'm glad we were up on the bridge :)
Costa Rica is the land of creatures--furry, scaly, creepy-crawly, fantastically-colored or camouflaged, big or small--and they are in abundance! The first night we got to the house we met the Halloween crab. Or rather I met when I opened a cupboard in the kitchen, saw one, screamed and slammed it shut again. This harmless little guy lives everywhere in Costa Rica, along the roadsides, sneaking into the houses, in the pool, on the trails, everywhere! It's quite funny after you get used to them--they try to hide when they see you, and if threatened, will put it's arms straight up and snap it's little purple claws at you. So funny!
They are actually kind of cute!
Here's one going for a swim--they seek water, however are not smart enough to stay away from chlorine so they have to be scooped out each morning to survive.
Since it was the first night, we were unaware the crabs would sneak into the house if the patio door was left open. Soon forgetting my initial fright, I also didn't consider there may be more... Unfortunately Steph got the pleasure of discovering the next crab, this time in her bathroom! Hubby Dan to the rescue above to see if he can trap the little guy :)
Boo's "I love crabs!" face :)

Success! after recruiting Barry's help with the dustpan.
After traveling all day, it was nice to finally get to the beautiful house and start our vacation, creatures and all. There was an earthquake about 5 minutes before we arrived at the house, which we did not feel en-route to the house and were told about once we arrived. I think it's due to the crazy driving there! People pass you around a blind curve at what feels like 60 mph!!! For one trip I was sitting in the front seat of the van with the driver and we got so close to a motorcyclist in front of us that I could read every word on the back of his t-shirt, yikes! I'm glad we had hired local drivers comfortable with the terrifying driving customs so we didn't have to try our hand at it. Stay tuned for more adventure!
